Saturday June 29 is Boy Scout night at the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers soccer game.  This is is a summer activity being organized by the Pack.  The game starts at 7:30pm but from 5:30-6:30pm youths will have the opportunity to do the requirements for the soccer belt loop with actual members of the Ft. Memorial Day Parade Information

All gave some….  Some gave all

Every year I ask the question “What is Memorial Day?” at a pack meeting and every year I get about 75% incorrect answers.  Most of our scouts and youth believe it is just a day off of school.  Some are partially right and say it is to honor our veterans.  Part of being a scout is honoring and respecting the flag.  That includes learning about and honoring those that respected it enough to give their lives for it.  I hope before everyone fires up the BBQ and jumps in the pool you can come out and join us with many others in the Town of Davie Memorial Day parade and ceremony.  Pack 183 will be proudly marching in this parade and will be observers of the service held at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds afterwards.

Date:  Monday May 27, 2012
Time:  Please arrive for parade lineup no later then 9:30am
Location:  Nova Eisenhower Elementary School parking lot just south of Nova/BCC (Davie Rd & SW 39 St).  Map from Weston to Nova Eisenhower Elementary
We will be organizing on the north side of the school facing 39th street.
Dress:  Full Class “A” uniform
If you are new to Pack 183 and haven’t had a chance to purchase the full uniform please join us and have your scout wear the Pack 183 Class “B” blue t-shirt.
Schedule:  Line up – 9:30am
Parade step off – 10am sharp!!
Memorial Day Ceremony – 11am @ Bergeron Rodeo Grounds

We will have small flags for the scouts and siblings at the parade.  If you wish to bring your own please do so.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone out there this year.  If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.  My phone number is (754) 444-6813 for anyone that needs to reach me before or on the day of the parade.

May Pack Meeting

As our last pack meeting of the year this is also our “graduation” pack meeting.  All Tigers, Wolves, and Bears who attend who have been in the program this year will receive their new rank neckerchief at this meeting.

April Pack Meeting Information

The April Pack meeting is this Friday 4/26 @ 6:30pm at Manatee Bay Elementary Cafeteria.  This is our Spring Recruitment meeting.  Your scout can get a “recruiter” patch for his uniform by bringing a friend and having him sign up.  Does your son have one or more friends who he would like to enjoy scouting with?  If so, have them come out to the pack meeting and see what Pack 183 is all about.  We will be having new parent orientation during the pack meeting so they can get all the information about Pack 183.
Raffle Tickets for April:

This month we will be giving out raffle tickets for the following:
  • Show up 6:30pm or before – 1 ticket
  • Pass full uniform inspection – 1 ticket
  • Bring at least one item for our Spring service project (see below) – 1 ticket maximum (No additional tickets for additional items brought)
We are going to be holding to these criteria as
Full uniform inspection includes:
  • BSA Class A shirt (Blue for Tigers, Wolves, Bears & tan for Webelos)
  • Blue BSA or equivalent shorts for Tigers, Wolves, and Bears
  • Olive green BSA shorts for Webelos
  • Neckerchief and slide for all scouts
  • Scout hat for all scouts
  • BSA socks (blue with band for Tigers, Wolves, Bears & olive green for Webelos)
I have noticed more and more scouts coming to our pack meetings wearing either Class B shirts or Class A with athletic shorts or just showing up in street clothes.  Every scouting event the boys should be in full Class A uniform unless otherwise instructed.  The scouting uniform signifies achievement and commitment to the scouting program.  We want every scout to wear their uniform and proudly represent Boy Scouts of America and the “183” they wear on their sleeves.
At our last Parent/Leader meeting we asked that every member of the pack committee as well as our den leaders also wear the full BSA leader uniform.  Again, our parents and leaders within Pack 183 are going to set the example of wearing the uniform proudly and it is expected that every scout also wear the uniform proudly.  If there are any issues with why a scout cannot be in Class A uniform please let your den leader or myself know.
Spring Service Project:

Mrs. Romaniw has been kind enough to find a new service project for Pack 183.  We are doing a clothing and goods drive to support the Sawgrass Nature Center.  Please see below for information on the items needed for donation.  Do you have at least one piece of children’s clothing that is no longer of use in your home but could go to this great cause?  If so, bring it (or more) to the pack meeting and we will make sure it gets to the good folks at Thred Up.  Please see the other items needed below if you would like to donate those.  This is a great cause and right in our back yard.

Thred Up, a used children’s clothing web store is supporting the Center with this endeavor and requires that all clothing it ‘be in “like-new” condition without tears, stains, fading, etc.  The clothes should be freshly laundered and have the label showing the size.  ThredUp does not accept infant clothing sized under 12 months, junior or adult clothing, sleepwear, socks, under garments or homemade or altered clothes.’
The Sawgrass Nature Center (SNC) is a not for profit organization whose mission is to care for sick, injured, or orphaned wildlife.  They also educate the public about our environment and its species.  If anyone wishes to donate more than clothing to the Center, they are always in need of
Bird Seeds, unsalted nuts, seeds & peanuts in shell, kitten, premium cat, ferret, pot bellied pig, rabbit and mice food.  For a complete list of items on their wish list, visit  http://sawgrassnaturecenter.org/to-donate/wish-list/.

Individual Scout Accounts — Every Scout Has One

As part of our fundraisers every scout has the ability to pay his own way in scouting.  With camp cards every scout is required to sell 25 cards to help fund the pack’s general needs.

After the first 25 cards, every card sold $2.50 goes into the scout’s “Scout account”.  He can use that money to pay for things like:

  • Pack dues
  • New scout uniform
  • Summer camp payment
  • Camping fees
  • Any other scouting related expense

If your scout was to sell a total of 50 camp cards then a total of $62.50 would be deposited into his scout account.  If he sold 100 then $187.50 would go into his scout account (75 camp cards x $2.50 each).  That is enough to pay for pack dues and at least one campout.

This money is tracked by the pack treasurer.  It is held in the pack’s bank account but reserved for use by the scout who earned the money.

If you want to use the money to pay for campouts – instead of writing a check tell the pack treasurer you want to use your son’s scout account to pay for it.  She will deduct the amount from his account.

If you want to pay for Summer Day Camp through a scout account just pay for Summer Day Camp normally and then give the receipt to the treasurer and ask to be reimbursed.  A check will be sent to you for the cost of camp.  This way your scout pays for his own summer camp experience.

If you want to know how much your scout has in his scout account contact the Pack 183 treasurer Nell Forrester (NForrester@bellsouth.net).

Any money in a scout account has to be used for scouting expenses.  If your scout crosses over to Boy Scouts or he leaves scouting the money is not reimbursed.  It is a “use it or lose it” account….so why not use it!!!

If there are any questions please contact your den leader.

Remember….  There is still over one month left until we close out camp cards.  So SELL those camp cards and have your scout pay his way through scouting.
