Pinewood Derby…. Two weeks away

The Pinewood Derby is only TWO WEEKS away.  The Pack 183 Pinewood Derby will be on Sunday March 3.  Weigh-in and registration starts at 9am.  The races will start promptly at 10am.  It is time to get those finishing touches on the cars and let them run.  Below are the rules for the Pinewood Derby.
Please note that the pack will not be supplying powdered graphite on the day of the derby.  We have had some issues in the past with this where the graphite gets everywhere and is very hard to remove from some clothes and surfaces.
Pinewood Derby Rules:
1. The car weight shall not exceed 5.0 ounces. The official race scale shall be considered final.
2. The overall length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
3. The overall width of the car shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches.
4. The car must have 1 ¾” clearance between the wheels.
5. The car must have 3/8” clearance underneath the body.
6. The wood provided in the kit must be used. The block may be shaped any way that is desired.
7. The wheels supplied with the kit must be used. The wheels may not be cut, drilled, beveled or rounded. You may remove the seam from the wheels.
8. The axles supplied with the kit must be used. They may be polished or lubricated.
9.  Only dry lubricants such as graphite or powdered teflon “white lube” will be allowed for lubricating the wheels. Lubricants may not foul the track.
10. Wheel bearings, washers or bushings are prohibited.
11. The car must not ride on any type of springs.
12 The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices.
13. If a car leaves its lane, at his sole discretion, the Cubmaster may inspect the track and, if a track fault is found which probably caused the initial violation, the Cubmaster may order the race to be rerun after the track is repaired.
14.  Construction of ALL entries MUST have begun AFTER last year’s races.
15.  Only one car may be registered by any person in the Pinewood Derby.
16.  Details such as the steering wheel, driver, decals, painting, and interior detail are permissible as long as these details do not exceed the maximum length, width, and weight specifications.

Scoutmaster’s Camporee

With the 2013 Scoutmaster’s Camporee in the books a big THANK YOU goes out to all of the parents in Pack 183 who did a fantastic job at making this campout a huge success.  This campout had its challenges with weather all weekend but everyone came together for one of the best Scoutmasters showings we’ve had.  Pack 183 ran 2 games and 1 shooting sports ranges over the weekend.  We had by far the biggest showing of volunteers and the events ran because of their efforts.  Every scout out there had a smile on his face and was moving the entire weekend.

In addition to the fun and games Pack 183 came away with 4 awards ribbons for the weekend:

–  First place – Campsite Inspection – Area 6

–  Second place – Trevi Fountain competition

–  Second place – Gateway Competition – Area 6

Cub-o-ree Signup – March 2013

Hi everyone,

Our next campout is going to be March 15-17 at Tree Tops Park in Davie.  This is going to be our Cub-o-Ree.  Cub-o-Ree is a cub scout oriented campout with other packs in the area.  At this campout we will be doing:

–  Archery
–  BB gun shooting
–  Tug-o-war
–  Cub Scout oriented games
–  Gateway building
–  Soap box racing

Pack 183 has not been to a Cub-o-ree since the 2009-2010 school year so most scouts have not had the opportunity to experience the fun of a district Cub-o-ree.

As we did with Scoutmasters the sign up will be online again.  Please click the link below and find your den and scout’s name.  Please fill out the cells accordingly in the row.

Cost:  $20 per person (This is the cost being charged by the Cub-o-Ree.  The pack will pay for food)
Deadline to sign up:  March 3
Deadline to pay camp fee:  March 7 (Pack meeting)

Link to sign up:  Cub-o-Ree sign up link

If there are any questions please contact your den leader, myself, or our camping chair Amy Hess.

Thank you,

Jeff
