Camp Seminole
We regret to inform you that Camp Seminole is CLOSED due to
the extensive damage caused by Hurricane Wilma. Though it is
impossible to guess when the camp will be re-opened, we need to be
prepared for the camp to be closed for 6 ? 12 months. Please know that
we are working very diligently on the restoration of camp and hope to
open sooner and provide a more concrete timeline for our volunteers.
Approximately 85% of all Australian Pines are down resulting in areas
where the trees are piled 12-15 feet high. The roads at camp are
impassible, the camps water infrastructure, 5 of the 12 campsite
latrines and the COPE Course are destroyed. The Council is currently
working with local governments and private businesses to initiate the
clean up operations as soon as possible. As a side note it is
important to know that the council is seeking approval on a Master
Development Plan for Camp Seminole. Prior to Hurricane Wilma, the Town
of Davie indicated that the Council would have to submit a 15 year
mitigation plan to eradicate all non-native vegetation (Australian
Pines, Brazilian Pepper, Melaleuca, etc..). Due to the extensive tree
and vegetation damage caused by the Hurricane we have decided to clear
the land immediately of all non-native vegetation and start a
reforestation program. Additionally, South Florida Council hopes to
receive approval of a Master Development Plan for the camp during the
clean up process and be in a position to start development on our
"new" camp. Though the devastation to the camp is heart breaking,
there is a silver lining. First we will complete the vegetation
eradication all at once. Secondly, we will be able to re-design the
camp to better serve our Scouts and Scouters.
We will have a few Council organized clean up days at Camp Seminole to
open the roads throughout camp. Please do not visit camp. Trees are
still coming down and those that are already down continue to shift.
Camp Sawyer
Camp is open! Camp received minor damage to the women?s bathroom roof
(tar paper and shingles), chartroom (water damage to kitchen
appliances and loss of store merchandise) and tree damage (approx. 30
trees still need to be cut up and removed). Additionally a significant
amount of sand was washed into campsites 1 and 2. We will be using
this sand to fill in the lower lying areas in camp and build up our
boating area. Unit service projects are welcome and should be
coordinated through Matt Vercher, the Monroe County District
Executive.
Camp Everglades
The National Park remains closed during their clean up efforts. It is
estimated that the park will re-open on or before November 18th. Our
camp received very minor tree damage. Approximately 6-8 trees need to
be cleared from the roadway and 1 pavilion roof and truss support
needs to be replaced.
A clean up/mowing day is scheduled for Saturday, November 19th from 8
a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Contact: Jim Happell at jhappell@rsmas.miami.edu,
cell:786-473-0700, work: 305-421-4111
The main effort will be to get the camp mowed and the roads cleared of
overhanging brush. We will also be fixing the entrance gates, the camp
sign sign, and rebuilding fire rings. Please bring your mowers, weed
wackers and other yard tools. Large commercial mowers such as bush
hogs, Dixie choppers, etc are especially needed. Other types of riding
mowers as well as push mowers are also useful and needed. Please bring
your hats, gloves, bug spray, and suntan lotion.
Drinks and lunch will be provided by South Florida Council.
This is a perfect opportunity for Boy Scouts to earn service
hours. Cub Scout participation is also welcome.
Tatham Service Center
The office is open. We sustained major tree damage losing the majority
of our trees. Additionally we have some water damage to our carpets in
the lobby and large conference areas. We are working with our
adjusters to replace the flooring as quickly as possible and hope to
retain a landscape company to help us with the exterior of our
building.
